Tips from a Mobile Pet Vet on Managing a Dog’s Anxiety
One of the many reasons our clients prefer a mobile pet vet is because of the anxiety their pets experience when visiting the vet.
Though you may not expect it, anxiety in pets is a surprisingly common condition. Our pets rely on us for their food, water, shelter, and even affection. As a result, it’s only natural that they can become anxious if we leave or when we take them out of their homes and into strange new environments.
However, just because your pet has been feeling anxious doesn’t mean it always has to be that way. In this month’s blog post, we’re discussing a few tips for managing your dog's anxiety.
Reducing Anxiety in Your Dog
Unfortunately, dogs are prime candidates for separation anxiety. Due to their instincts as pack animals and their deep emotional attachments to their owners, dogs can become anxious when separated from owners or placed into new environments. Additionally, dogs can develop anxiety as puppies due to difficult or traumatic events. So how do you help your canine companions? Well, you have a few options.
Get Some Exercise
One of the main reasons why in reasons why dogs feel so much separation anxiety is because the amount of time they’re apart from you feels tremendous. However, there’s a simple way to fix this: with sleep. By exercising your dog, you’ll get them tired and make it easier for them to sleep, which occupies a great deal of their day while you’re away.
Give Them Clothes
Yes, you read that right. Much of the anxiety a dog may feel from travel, separation, or loud noises can be reduced with the comforting presence of an owner. You can increase this stress reduction by draping your dog in an article of clothing you wear often; your dog will smell your scent on it and feel reassured.
Give Them a Time-Out
Though this may seem like a punishment, it really doesn’t have to be. Prepare a safe and comfortable space for your dog that they can truly make their own. Consider furnishing a crate with blankets or familiar toys for them to surround themselves with. We also recommend covering the crate with blankets in order to provide a low-light environment and some sound dampening.
